The Rebuild NorthBay Foundation was founded in response to the devastating wild fires that raced across California’s North Bay region in October of 2017. The Foundation is dedicated to providing long-term assistance to public, private, and nonprofit communities as they work through the recovery and rebuilding stages. The organization was founded to answer a specific community need for a single place to turn for information as they moved through these difficult processes. With the goal of launching their new website on the one-year anniversary of the fires, Firefly Partners worked with Rebuild NorthBay to create a stunning site that provides much-needed resources to a variety of audiences.

One Site, Many Audiences

The Rebuild NorthBay team came to the table with a logo and ideas-together we selected colors, fonts, and an overall style that matched their tone and mission. Since the North Bay community was now beyond the need for emergency response, the Foundation’s goal was to provide ongoing education and resources for four primary audiences: Residents, Business Owners, Contractors/Builders, and Community Members. Custom icons function as visual cues that lead people to the most useful resources for their situation.

Allow Us to Introduce Ourselves

As a new voice in the North Bay community, the organization also needed their website to serve as an introduction of their mission to their constituents. The Rebuild NorthBay homepage features an RSS feed with news articles about the Foundation’s efforts. The feed is integrated with Google Alerts, and team members are able to view and approve articles before they appear on the site.

Cristen English, Project Manager:

Working with the Rebuild NorthBay Foundation was inspiring. Knowing how immediate an impact this site would have to the community it was serving was a real driving force behind our work. We wanted to help them achieve their mission and together we worked toward the goal of providing easy, accessible information to help the North Bay community rebuild.

A Flexible Resource Library

The Rebuild NorthBay team needed an easy-to-sort library that was also prolific in what it offered. The custom solution we built allows users to filter by audience, topic, location, and resource type. Users can also scroll through everything without sorting. As resources are added by the Foundation’s team, they can mark them as “new” or “featured” and change those identifiers at any time. Resources can be both external, like a news story, or internal, like a blog post, giving the team flexibility to share important updates and promote their own content.

An Eventful Calendar

Rebuild NorthBay’s event calendar does just what they hoped it would: provides information and allows for community interaction. The calendar is searchable by date and keyword and when users hover over an event a description pops up with detailed information. This makes it simple to learn more without having to click back and forth between different pages. When you do click through to an event page, you can import details to your Google or Apple calendar with the click of a button. When community members want to submit events for inclusion, the process is a snap. Using a simple form, they provide information about their event. Submissions are reviewed by Rebuild NorthBay staff before they are published online.

Finishing Touches

Rebuild NorthBay’s staff and board wanted their site to work for, and be fueled by, the community. Firefly Partners built a comments form that allows the Foundation’s team to get direct feedback. We also created a form that allows people to submit content that can be added to the site. A featured project section on the homepage gives staff flexibility to highlight neighborhood projects or promote internal campaigns. And Google Translate was incorporated to help make the site accessible to the region’s large Spanish-speaking community. In ways large and small, Firefly was able to achieve Rebuild NorthBay’s goal of having a site that community members can contribute to and that gives them ways to provide information to their neighbors.
